Designing for Machine Learning @ USAA

More data has been created in the past two years than in the entire prior history of the human race. Today, less than 0.5% of that data is analyzed or used, but that is quickly changing. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are transforming the way that software is written and therefore every experience that is powered by software. As Design Thinkers, we have a unique opportunity to reframe the power of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to solve human problems. We will explore what it means to design for an AI/ML enabled experience, how it affects the design process and possible solutions through exploration of a real-life project.

In this course, students will work within cross-disciplinary teams to:

  • Discover the human needs of people trying to improve their financial security
  • Synthesize these needs into opportunities
  • Determine the role of data and AI in creating a personalized response
  • Design a prototype of the ideal day-to-day experience

Students will build an understanding of how Artificial Intelligence reframes the possible, and will learn how to incorporate these growing capabilities into their concepts, products and experiences while maintaining a human lens. Money, saving and investing is a more fluid and data rich space than ever before, and touches our core human needs of security and agency. In this space we will explore the interplay between human emotions and machine intelligence.

Quantified Design @ McKinsey Group

How do you bring analytical rigor to concretely assess complex customer behavior while creating distinctive products and services that infuse creativity and customer-led thinking? This course will explore the intersection of Design and Data as part of the emerging field of Quantified Experience Design (QED). QED is a big-data driven design process that combines best-in class machine learning techniques with a human-centered design approach to identify and size the best solutions to deliver customer and business value. We will learn how businesses can define, quantify, and prioritize ideas to deliver customer delight and business impact.

Introduction to Integrated Design

Introduction to the concept of Design Thinking as a core fundamental in education and industry across all disciplines and channels. Guest speakers may facilitate discussion of various innovation issues facing businesses today.

Introduction to Design Thinking

What is Design Thinking? Most of our daily experience is the result of design, intentional or not. It’s a persistent act. We deal with the consequences all the time. In practice, design is first an act of thinking. Then, those thoughts are applied to the act of making – a product, service, place, or a whole experience like going to Disney World. Design is at its best when designers are thinking and making with people in mind. So, a human-centered mindset is a core attribute of design thinking. Design is at its worst when it’s an afterthought, such as a confusing tax form or most ATMs. In this course, students learn the principles of design thinking and apply them to real-world problems while working in interdisciplinary teams. Students learn how to frame problems, learn about people and their behaviors, then apply those insights to improve products and services through rapid prototyping and iteration. Students from all majors are welcome.

Portfolio Critique

Development of a portfolio of work to present for feedback and exploration of the importance of storytelling in the professional world. Designed to help students understand what is expected to create a personal portfolio to show potential employers. Students should come prepared with work that could be arranged into a portfolio.

Design in Business

Today’s business environment is evolving dramatically faster than that of a generation ago. Consider that in 1955, the life expectancy of a company in the Fortune 500 was 75 years. By 2015, that life expectancy had dropped to a mere 15 years. In fact, between the years 2000 and 2010, 52% of Fortune 500 companies disappeared. What is the cause for this mass disruption? Information technology has accelerated the rate of innovation, creating wholly new business models that could not have been anticipated and thwarted by the traditional CEO using traditional corporate strategy. For example, the world’s largest taxi company owns no cars; the world’s most popular media owner, creates no content; the world’s most valuable retailer, has no inventory; and, the world’s largest accommodation provider, owns no real estate. These companies – Uber, Facebook, Alibaba and Airbnb, respectively – were all founded within the last 20 years and have become dominant players in global business. What’s more, the incumbents in their respective fields didn’t see them coming.

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to a set of tools and processes that they can use to discover and develop new sources of value and competitive advantage. Today’s most successful businesses are those that are most responsive. That is to say that they can quickly adapt and evolve to customers’ needs, adopting and implementing new systems, technologies and business models.

Upper division standing required; this would be an excellent course for people who have already taken DES 301/ITD 301D: Introduction to Design Thinking or ITD 350: Design and Artificial Intelligence.

Longhorn Startup

Meeting times: Thursdays 6-9pm

The Longhorn Startup Lab is an intensive project-based course in the Spring semester that identifies student entrepreneurs who are building scalable technology companies and gets them real course credit for working on their startups while still in school. These students receive weekly one-on-one mentoring sessions with successful entrepreneurs and free coworking memberships. The semester culminates in a Demo Day where the students present their companies to the Austin community. You MUST ALSO fill out the application form at longhornstartup.com for instructor approval.
